About the variety
Kartlis Ghrubela, the Ghrubela of Kartli (VIVC 5087), is a rare indigenous grey-berried variety of Kartli. Ghrubela is a group name: VIVC lists five distinct varieties under it — Imeruli, Kakhuri, Kartlis, Kurdzeni and Ubususu. Georgian ampelography describes the Kartli Ghrubela in a glabrous-leaved and a hairy-leaved form, while VIVC keeps the glabrous Ghrubela Ubususu as a separate white-berried variety (5089). The berries are medium-sized, round, reddish- or greenish-grey under a heavy waxy bloom, thin-skinned and juicy; the grapes ripen at the end of September, and the reference books rate the variety as a blending and brandy grape. In Gamarjveba, Kvemo Kartli, Gabriel's Wine has planted it and bottles it as a varietal amber wine.
