About the variety
Mtevandidi, 'big bunch', is a rare red variety of Guria in western Georgia. In some villages of Upper Guria — Partskhma, Sachamiaseri, Dablatsikhe — it is also called Akido, the local word for a cane bearing two bunches; VIVC lists Akido and Didmtevana among its synonyms. It ripens late on vigorous vines, crops well and is relatively resistant to fungal diseases. The wine is red, with balanced alcohol and acidity and a good palate; the grapes were also eaten fresh. Its range shrank as high-yielding Tsolikouri spread through Guria, and today it survives mostly in collections and a few family vineyards; Nodos Wine bottles it as a varietal red.
