About the variety

Sakmevela is a white variety of Guria in western Georgia and, by the account of Georgian ampelographers, one of the more important of the region's white wine grapes. It ripens late on vigorous vines but suffers badly from fungal diseases, which is why it gave way to hardier varieties and now survives mainly in collections. Its wine is a white of decent quality, traditionally made for local drinking. Shumi bottles it in its Lost Collection series of rare Georgian varieties.
