About the variety

Zhghia is a rare indigenous red variety from Kakheti, known locally also as Khiteri, Bzhghia (Imereti) and Mzhghria (Kakheti); VIVC lists it under number 13440. The berries are medium-sized, round, thin-skinned and dark pink to almost black, and because they ripen unevenly the bunch looks mottled. The vine is productive and ripens from the second half of September at 17–18.5% sugar and 7–8 g/l acidity. It goes mostly into blends and brandy; as a dry wine of its own it is pinkish, light and low in alcohol. In Kondoli, Ghvardzelashvili's Marani bottles it as a varietal qvevri wine.
