Why this weight

How the class was assigned.

The class is a judgement about the competition, not about the wines. It rests on four public grounds, and what we relied on is printed here in plain text.

The largest international wine competition: blind tasting, published methodology

What decides a class

  • Blind tasting

Is the tasting blind, and are the rules published?

  • Share of medals

What share of entries leaves with a medal?

  • The jury

How is the jury composed, and how independent is it of the entrants?

  • Cost of entry

What does entry cost, and is marketing sold alongside the medal?

Where we cannot establish these, the class stays unassigned — a guessed grade is worse than an honest gap.

Medalists

Every award from this competition in our catalogue.

Grouped by the year the award was given, newest first. A medal belongs to a batch rather than to a wine in general, so the vintage of the awarded batch is printed on the row.

A row marked claimed is known from the producer or a shop rather than from the competition's own results. Medals are weighted by how trustworthy the competition is — they are never summed as equals, and a wine without awards is not worse than one with a pay-to-play medal. How we weigh awards.

Sources and other competitions

Where these results come from.

  • The competition's own results

    541 awards

Medals taken from the results the competition publishes: the competition, the year and the wine as the list names it.

  • Producer's website

    84 awards

Medals the producer lists for its own wines, with the year and the vintage as stated. Marked claimed on the row.
