A medium tulip: sweetness reads without extra air, and a big bowl would only let the wine warm up.

What to check for Khvanchkara

Khvanchkara is a naturally semi-sweet red PDO from Racha, made only from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes grown in a small demarcated micro-zone around Ambrolauri. Because these two grapes grow on a very limited area (the core micro-zone is on the order of tens of hectares, within roughly 900 ha of Racha vineyards) while the name is among Georgia's most famous, the volume sold under the name has historically exceeded what the zone can produce, and falsification of the name is well documented in the wine press. What to check: the producer is registered in the Racha/Khvanchkara zone and owns or buys Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes there, and the label names the Khvanchkara appellation. The winery's page on getwine shows where it is registered and its vineyards.

Where these figures come from

Only the unusual is coloured: warmth and September rain are compared with this area's mean over the previous ten years; a frost means a minimum of −2 °C or lower after 10 April. An uncoloured indicator means “as usual”, a dashed one means no data. How the year went in other zones is behind the year link. ERA5-Land reanalysis, precipitation from ERA5 (Copernicus Climate Change Service), grid cell 42.600000 / 43.000000. The comparison is with this zone's own mean over the previous ten years: against the 1991–2020 climate normal almost every recent year in Kakheti would read as "warmer than usual", which says more about warming than about the season. This is a gridded model, not a weather station in the vineyard.

Warmth and rain explain what the season was like; they do not replace tasting and do not tell you whether the wine is ready to drink.
